Currently Niko is delivering substation designs and upgrades from 11 kV through to 220 kV. We design protection upgrades for several of New Zealand’s biggest generators, and grid connections for solar, wind, and BESS Technologies for various clients. Niko expects to shortly start the design for a new substation as part of Transpower’s early adoption of their new digital substation technology. By joining Niko, you will be involved in designing and delivering interesting projects with novel technologies, throughout New Zealand.

The opportunity we offer: 

We are looking for one or two talented Graduate Engineers to join our team, located in Hamilton or Christchurch.

As part of our graduate development program, you will work alongside some of New Zealand’s leading electrical engineers, who will share their knowledge with you.  You will undertake a variety of work associated with the electrical engineering field with exposure to primary and secondary systems, earthing, protection, generation, and control systems.

In this role, you won’t be restricted to one area of work.  Instead, you’ll explore diverse aspects of power system engineering. Your key responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical support and engineering solutions for power industry projects. This includes site visits to review installations and, where necessary, conduct testing.
  • Take an active role in creating detailed designs, starting from grasping customer requirements to delivering engineering analysis and solutions. You will assist in the preparation of engineering design documentation, perform engineering calculations, and manage equipment sizing and selection, leveraging a variety of Power System Analysis tools for in-depth power systems analysis.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with our clients, ensuring clear communication and effective coordination of projects. Your ability to understand and meet client needs will be key to fostering long-term partnerships.

  • A Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology degree or be in your final year of study with the expectation that you will complete the above courses successfully in the next 12 months.
  • A passion for the electricity industry.

  • Excellent communication, presentation, and computer skills.
  • A strong desire for continuous learning and development.

Previous Experience: 

For this role we don’t need you to have experience in industry. However, we are keen to consider those with some industry experience through previous employment or industry placements.
