The role:
We are seeking a talented engineer to join Niko Engineering as an HV Cable Design Engineer. This is a technical role, where you will lead, execute and contribute to upgrades and new site developments for some of our largest clients across Transmission, generation and distribution.
Your primary focus will be the delivering HV cable projects (110kV and 220kV). In addition to this you will have the opportunity to work on MV cable projects (33kV and 11kV) and other substation design projects. It’s your choice if you want to specialise or provide a wider range of technical skills.
Niko has the capacity to welcome a designer / technical expert at Senior or Principal level.
Key aspects of this role include:
- Developing designs from option studies through to detailed designs, technical specifications, and reports for electrical upgrade and new build projects.
- Design management – Communicating and coordinating project activities with others.
- Developing relationships with our clients.
- Preparation of proposals for design tenders.
- Managing allocated time for tasks effectively.
- Understanding and keeping abreast of International Standards, New Zealand and Australian Standards, and legislative requirements.
- Carrying out quality assurance reviews of work by other Engineers.

We’re on the lookout for an exceptional candidate who aligns with our vision and values. Our ideal candidate possesses the following qualities:
- A passion for delivering excellent engineering, not just managing others to deliver.
- A chartered Engineer or working towards accreditation.
- Tertiary qualified in Electrical Engineering, but we would consider significant industry experience as an alternative.
- Capable of both independent work and collaboration.
- Excellent communication, presentation, and computer skills.
- Strong desire for continuous learning and development.
The preferred location is Hamilton. However, we are open to candidates who would work from our Christchurch or Auckland offices, or who wish to work remotely.

Experience:
- Senior level: 8 years’ experience, specialising in cable engineering at 110kV and above.
- Principal level: 15+ years’ experience, specialising in cable engineering at 110kV and above.
