Redefining N-1 Security: Boosting Network Capacity Without Undue Risk

Can modern distribution networks safely unlock more capacity from existing assets before investing in augmentation?

Traditional N-1 planning has served the electricity industry well for decades. But while we have better network visibility, smarter operational tools, improved analytics and a wide proliferation of generation and load management options, why are we still making investment decisions based on assumptions that no longer reflect how modern networks operate.

That’s the question explored by Richard Kingsford and Brabbyn Osburn in a technical paper on N-1 security assessment, presented at September’s EEA2026 Conference.

The paper introduces a three time-domain framework that combines traditional planning principles with a more detailed understanding of asset capability, network flexibility, generation and load management.

Drawing on a real-world case study, the paper illustrates how this approach can provide a more accurate understanding of network capacity and investment timing while maintaining established security standards.

The outcome?

  • Approximately 7 years’ deferral of a major capital expenditure
  • A $15 million upgrade project delayed
  • Estimated NPV benefit of $5.7 million

All while operating networks with established asset limits and without additional network risk.
