We are taking expressions of interest for summer interns for 2024/2025.  

We take immense pride in delivering high quality specialist services to clients spanning power transmission, generation, and distribution. As a respected consultant we are privileged to be able to work with industry leading companies such as Transpower, Mercury, Genesis, Meridian, and Eastland Generation. 

Currently Niko is delivering substation designs and upgrades from 11 kV through to 220 kV. We design protection upgrades for several of New Zealand’s biggest generators, and grid connections for solar, wind, and BESS Technologies for various clients. Niko expects to shortly start the design for a new substation as part of Transpower’s early adoption of their new digital substation technology. By joining Niko, you will be involved in designing and delivering interesting projects with novel technologies, throughout New Zealand.

The opportunity we offer: 

We are looking for Intern Engineers to join our team, located in Hamilton or Christchurch.

As an intern you will work alongside some of New Zealand’s leading electrical engineers.  Though the scope of the role is not yet set, you can expect to undertake work in one or more of the following areas – primary and secondary systems, earthing, protection, generation, and control systems. 

This role is designed to contribute to our projects while fostering your personal and professional development. You’ll receive coaching that acknowledges your strengths and supports your learning.  

Scholarship Programme

Interns currently in their third year of BE (Hons) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering have a fantastic opportunity to be considered for a $5,000 educational grant to support their fourth year of study.

Niko is a niche consultant specialising in the electricity industry, with a dedicated team of 55 staff. We’re on the lookout for students who are ideally their second to last year of study towards a Bachelor of Engineering or Bachelor of Technology degree.  The role would provide holiday work that meets your degree requirements for experience. 

The personal attributes you will need to be successful: 

  • A passion for the electricity industry.  
  • The capability to problem solve, take the initiative, and to work both independently and collaboratively. 
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and computer skills. 

Previous Experience: 

For this role we don’t need you to have experience in industry.  This role is targeted to providing you some of this experience.
